A HOTEL / AN ARTIST

Here you will find the famous repetitive stamped motifs, the sparkling colours, the painting on canvas sheets – all typical of the major artist Claude Viallat, the founder of the “Supports/Surfaces” movement.

The emphasis placed on the works of Claude Viallat in a Vacances Bleues hotel started with the renovation of the swimming pool at the Plein Sud Hotel in Hyères in harmony with one of the artist’s large canvases which had recently been acquired and installed in the hotel.

Then again in 2007, on the inception of a new programme of works, the Vacances Bleues Foundation commissioned a large silkscreen print on a vertical canvas (8m x 1.25m) to be installed at the entrance of the hotel, completed by 5 more silkscreen prints (1.2m x 1.12m) to be hung in the inner areas.
All of these will be added to by an exhibition of two other original works by the artist belonging to the Vacances Bleues Foundation.

Claude Viallat was born in Nîmes in 1936 and began to exhibit his work in the sixties; shortly afterwards he gave up the brush and the easel to devote himself to a new kind of painting he invented, based on repeated motifs: his famous “stamp” which he stencilled on to canvases laid on the ground then to be displayed on a wall but without a frame or chassis. Later on, he started to decorate everyday objects: parasols, clothes, curtains, blinds, post bags or military tarpaulins, creating in this way monumental works of art as well as all sorts of miscellaneous objects or structures made of wood, rope or pebbles... In 1969, he became one of the founder members of the “Supports/Surfaces” group, the last French avant-garde movement who considered the materials and the creative gestures involved in a work of art to be of greater importance than the subject of the work itself.

Claude Viallat has created an original body of work, exhibited in most of the art museums and galleries of Europe, America and Asia as well as belonging to a number public and private collections. He lives and works in Nîmes and is represented by the Daniel Templon Gallery (Paris) and Eric Linard Publishing (La Garde Adhémar).
